Item description: * See scan very good condition. This is a very scarce Bulgarian cover / postcard mailed from the 2nd Bulgarian Airplane Detachment / Unit during WWI. As all collectors from the aerophilately know, items from this period are extremely scarce due to the fact that it is the era of the pioneer flight and pilot officers were an extremely low number of enthusiasts. Bulgaria and Bulgarian Royal aviation has a strong history and is actually the first country in the world that used a bomb from the air during the Balkan Wars of 1912 1913. During WWI Bulgaria was an Imperial German ally and there were also lots of German officers involved as well as lots of German airplanes and other aviation equipment. Mostly Bulgaria used its WWI aviation for defense of the Capital of Sofia, but also in the Macedonia occupation front, the occupation of Romania and Greece, as well as protecting the Black Sea coast. This was done together with the 2 Balloon units attached to 2nd and 3rd Bulgarian Army.
The postal history philatelic item listed is a card from the 2nd Airplane Aviation Unit and mailed probably somewhere from parts of the Macedonian occupied territories during that time or the air runway of Oudovo, Veles or Skopie in Macedonia in particular. At that time the 2nd Airplane Unit was attached to the Staff of 1st Bulgarian Army. There is a military cachet applied of the 2nd Airplane Unit. All postal such items were personally authorized by the current officer in charge. Thus all pieces were signed by most of the famous Bulgarian pilot aces. This way the collector also gets an original autograph of the ace. THE REAL militaria stuff
Some brief history of the 2nd Airplane Unit:
02.06.1916 - Sofia. A new wartime staff of the Bulagrian Aviation has been formed to the Staff of the Field Forces, including: 1-st Airplane Unit, 2-nd Airplane Unit, 1-st Balloon Unit, 2-nd Balloon Unit, Airship / Zeppelin Unit, Subsidiary Aviation Technical Park, Gas-Producing Balloon Unit and an Airplane Depot.;
18.07.1916 - Oudovo. The 2nd Airplane Unit is based in Oudovo - Macedonia.;
08.07.1917 - Petrich. 1-st taken captive pilot after an air fight over Petrich carried by the pilots of the 2-nd Airplane Unit.;
21.09.1918 Veles - Macedonia. 2-nd Airplane Detachment is based in Veles.;
23.09.1918 Skopie - Macedonia. 2-nd Airplane Detachment is based in Skopie.;
25.09.1918 - Novo Selo Macedonia. Last base of 2-nd Airplane Detachment before leaving back to Sofia.;
Extremely scarce aerophilately item. True gem for any collection.
